Summer School 2025: 40 Years of Aufschreibesysteme 1800 · 1900, September 16 to 19, 2025

From September 17 to 19, 2025, the Friedrich-Kittler-Gesellschaft e.V. will hold its annual summer school in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Shintaro Miyazaki at the Department of Media Studies at Humboldt University of Berlin. The three-day event will focus on current debates surrounding Friedrich Kittler's controversial habilitation thesis Aufschreibesysteme 1800·1900 (Wilhelm Fink Verlag, Munich 1985).
Martin Stingelin and Moritz Hiller, the main editors of Kittler’s Collected Works published by Merve Verlag, will provide insights into their ongoing editorial work and look at the book from the perspective of their research on Kittler's estate. An opening lecture by Hans-Jörg Rheinberger and Dinah Pfau, as well as a panel discussion between Rüdiger Campe, Stefan Heidenreich, Philipp von Hilgers, and Martin Stingelin on the relevance and impact of Aufschreibesysteme on literary theory, media studies, cultural studies, and the history of science on the final day will frame the summer school thematically before it celebrates its conclusion with a performance in Florian Leitner's media theater.

Master students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs with research projects related to Aufschreibesysteme and Friedrich Kittler's thinking are invited to submit proposals for papers (max. 1 A4 page) to sandrina.khaled@hu-berlin.de.

The registration deadline is September 7, 2025.

Working languages are German and English.

Three ECTS credits can be awarded for active participation in the Summer School, the recognition of which must be clarified with your university.
